What were conditions like on board prison ships to Australia in the early 19th century? |

This is background research for a homework on Great Expectations, so around that time period. What would it have been like when Magwitch was on them? (If you haven't read the book, I think it's around 1800-1820 or so, but even within a few decades is fine.) |

Conditions aboard these ships were the most horrific. Very similar to slave ship conditions. You see, you have to know society's perspective of that time. There was secular law and church law. They were very intertwined. The smallest infraction of law, which was lying or stealing, and people believed you were going to hell, you would be worth NOTHING beneficial to society as an adult. |
